Nabil

Hello! I am Nabil

I am originally from Dhaka, Bangladesh and moved to Houston in 2013. I recently became a US citizen. I majored in Computer Science and have a minor in Mathematics from the University of Houston.

I spend most of my time going to UX design meetups and meeting new people. When I am not doing that, I am usually playing on my Nintendo Switch, watching anime, or spend my time learning and practising photography.

Co-founding a startup
It was called Shoot and we designed, built, and launched a marketplace website that people could use to book photographers.

It was an exhilarating experience because I knew people had side projects that they were working on, but I was building something that created paid opportunities for talented Houston photographers.

Attending a Startup Accelerator program at Rice.
We had our idea, we had somewhat of plan. We needed to learn how to build and run a business. We applied and got accepted to a 3 month accelerator program at Rice University, in collaboration with University of Houston.

The MVP and thinking like a Product Designer
We learned a lot over the summer and used that to refine our idea. I started getting very serious about doing user research and learning good design strategies, including doing usability testing for the product I had a built.

Landing my first internship in UX
Designing at my own startup taught me a lot and gave me the confidence to apply for internships. It was my final year of the Computer Science program and an internship could make me a better designer and I can learn more about structure.

I applied at HCSS and they really liked my passion for UX and my prior experience and I got hired. At this point I was finishing up my degree, running my startup, and doing an internship.

Burnout, and leaving my startup
The pressure really got to me and I burnt out. I had no choice but to leave my startup. Shoot was about to enter the next stage and they needed a more experience technical cofounder to lead that stage.

I focused more on my internship, taking new projects, attending more meetups to meet new people, and building myself as a hirable designer.

Graduation and the end of my internship
I graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor's in Computer Science. However, I didn't want to be a developer, I wanted to pursue design entirely because that is where I provided most value.

With my graduation ended my internship and I thought I had a good amount of experience under my belt to start pursuing full-time roles.
